Black History Month
In the UK, October is the month of celebrating Black History. In Birmingham, there’s a Black Pound pop up shop in Great Western Arcade in town. Here, you can shop items from over 40 black founders in one place. Jamii has a pop up shop in MADE London and the Black Pound Day flagship store continues to permanently celebrate shopping from Black founders in London’s Westfield shopping centre.
Independence days
Cuba
Cuba’s war for independence from Spain began in 1868. However, it was nearly 30 years before formal independence was declared in 1902 due to a war for independence from Spain. Cuba celebrates 120 years of independence on 10th October.
St. Vincent & The Grenadines
The last of the Winward Islands to gain their freedom from British rule, St. Vincent & The Grenadines celebrate 43 years of independence on 27 October. Read more about St. Vincent in this blog post.
The clocks go back
Remember the clocks go back on Sunday 30 October at 2 a.m. I'm sure your phone will do it automatically, but if you still have analogue clocks in the house like me, don’t forget to turn them back on Sunday morning.
Totes Towers
We will be celebrating Black History month by visiting the Caribbean Front Room installation at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery, curated by Julie Whitter.
The exhibition, which runs from 1st-30th October offers a trip down memory lane, staging a typical front room and living room that would have been the hub of many Caribbean households in the later decades of the twentieth century.
